About this Playlist

On May 18, 1976, Carnegie Hall held its 85th anniversary celebration—hailed as the "Concert of the Century"—following an endowment campaign led by Isaac Stern to save the Hall from demolition. The repertoire combined extraordinary musicians playing together for the first time: Vladimir Horowitz and Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau; Stern, Yehudi Menuhin, and Leonard Bernstein; Horowitz, Stern, and Mstislav Rostropovich.
