About this Playlist

Inspired by a recent article in Smithsonian Magazine titled "What Happens in the Brain When Music Causes Chills?", we asked Carnegie Hall's social media followers to share what works of music elicit such an emotional and physical response. This playlist includes selections from our fans' overwhelming feedback, and explores how classical music of all varieties can tug at the heartstrings — from Barber's beloved Adagio for Strings, to the haunting beauty of Arvo Pärt's Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten, to the sheer power of "Great Gate of Kiev" from Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition.
